How effective were your actions in helping you meet your goals?
Thus far, I was able to follow the first few steps. I have not been able to do the last steps which is to analyze student data and create goals alongside with students because of the time of year, however I feel ready since I have the sites set up.

What have you learned so far that you can apply in your instructional practice?
I have learned that designing lessons for our digital native students is easier than I thought. There are so many resources available online that can assist any teacher with any lesson or any students with any skill with the use of the Internet.
What do you still have to learn? What new questions have arisen?
I have to learn how to make time into the class schedule for using websites to reinforce skills. My questions are:
How often should I allow time for students to visit these sites in the classroom?
How often should I assign homework using these sites?
How will you adjust your plan to fit your current needs?
At this point in my plan I do not need to adjust anything. However, once schools begins I think I will make adjustments on the when to create goals with students based on their data.

Gutierrez27,
ReplyDeleteI met with one of my fifth grade teaching partners yesterday and we were discussing how we can use the time available to allow students more use of technology to research information. We came up with an idea to allow students to get into weekly groups to research a topic that they are learning one of the content areas 3 days a week for 15 minutes after lunch recess. Every Friday each group will present what they learned in a short discussion.
Bryan,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your idea! I think I will do the same. At first I thought 15 minutes each time might not be suffice but then as I rethinked it I realized it is perfect considering the lack of time we have in general. I was wondering, will the information be presented on fridays via Blogs?

I teach high school and have used blogs in my classroom. I think it is really great that you are incorporating them into your fifth grade classroom. While I'm sure that many have heard that this is the "digital" generation, I don't often see much evidence to support that. While we are living in the digital age, I'm not sure that the name automatically applies to those currently living. Becoming a digital native is a learned skill, not something you are born with. Knowing how to send a text message does not equal technological fluency.
ReplyDeleteThe more familiar students can become with worthwhile educational technology, the better, especially if it is done sooner. I think there are huge possibilities for communication in the coming years, thanks to technology. Students are going to need to know how to collaborate with one another, and weekly group work is a fantastic idea.
I, too, feel kind of stagnated with the plan since I don't currently have any students around to see some results, but it is great that you have your plan in place!
After reading your blog, I guess that I really did not think about how easy it is to design a good learning experience for our students. They are digital natives and any time that you use technology with them, you can be preparing them for their future. I was showing my summer school class people who create websites and video games for a living. Some of their eyes opened up really big and could not wait to hear more information about it. That was not my intention at all to show them this to get them prepared for their life.
ReplyDeleteI think that a great way to implement the aspect of homework and the usage of technology would be to have a blog or a Wiki. Monitoring this would be the easiest and the best way for you to see the students discuss things all on their own without your guidance.
Good luck and keep on looking for new websites.
